Designed in the 1930’s by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, The Palácio Gustavo Capanema became a landmark of the Brazilian modernist movement.
The entire 15-story structure is raised a massive three stories into the air on monumental concrete pillars, creative a floating illusion and opening up the ground level completely revealing an open plaza instead of a closed off building.
Azulejo tile art and murals are featured throughout the design and were created by renowned artist Candido Portinari. Tropical gardens were designed by Burle Marx.
