Gozo Island Textures

In the island of Gozo, sitting just north of the Maltese archipelago, I found myself surrounded by vast landscapes with alien-like patterns and textures shaped and sculpted by the wind and sea over millions of years. As I set out for solo walks at dawn or dusk to avoid the Mediterranean heat, I found myself fully immersed in the often deserted landscape and hunting for details and textures in the yellow sandstone, coral reefs and hidden coves and beaches.

It was a nice change of scenery from the often chaotic urban landscapes I’m used to. I can’t wait to return and explore more of what this island has to offer.

Colors and Contrasts in Athens

I recently spent a few days in Athens and wanted to try to capture some of the city’s vibrant urban landscapes and energy.

Although open to all photographic opportunities around me, I always like to go out with a a specific intent when shooting as to not get overwhelmed. In the case of photographing Athens I decided to approach the city with a focus on color and contrast while exploring side streets and the ancient ruins. I was looking for strong characters and contrasting dark shadows and I was blessed with crisp blue skies so that played into the color aspect of a lot of the images captured there.

Chasing Waves in Rio

Summer evening rituals at Rio’s Arpoador beach in Brazil, where you can find youth chasing the thrill of a jumping off the rocks almost daily.

For this series I wanted to capture a tighter composition to highlight the shadows and the way the setting sun was lighting up everything. I thought shooting with a longer lens also allowed for more abstract interpretations of the scene and brought the crashing waves closer to the subjects through compression. When composing my shots, I wanted to be positioned above looking down so that we don’t really see the horizon, it gives the scene a more intense and locked-in look where the viewer is forced to focus on the action.

Oscar Niemeyer's Stunning Museum on a Cliff

Perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean and Rio de Janeiro’s stunning mountains, The Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art, which looks like a space ship or UFO, appears to float over it all. It’s one of those sites that sticks with you long after your visit.

I wanted to highlight the curves, color and unique structure of the building, framed against the epic vista. I ended up visiting at two different times to get a variety of lighting conditions as I usually enjoy playing with silhouettes in harsh light as well as softer sunset hues. Sunset is especially gorgeous as the sun catches all the best angles of Niemeyer’s work of art.
