Capturing light and shadow at New York's TWA Hotel

Playing with light, sculptural curves and primary colors at JFK’s midcentury modern TWA hotel. Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1962, it served as the main terminal for TWA and has since been restored as a hotel. It stands as a remarkable landmark of jet age architecture.

I spent a couple hours observing how the sun lit up the space and capturing shadows and shapes that drew the eye. Highly recommend a visit even just to admire the space if you have a couple hours layover at JFK.

Exploring a modernist landmark in Rio de Janeiro

Designed in the 1930’s by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, The Palácio Gustavo Capanema became a landmark of the Brazilian modernist movement.

The entire 15-story structure is raised a massive three stories into the air on monumental concrete pillars, creative a floating illusion and opening up the ground level completely revealing an open plaza instead of a closed off building.

Azulejo tile art and murals are featured throughout the design and were created by renowned artist Candido Portinari. Tropical gardens were designed by Burle Marx.

Shooting in Mleiha for Assouline

I was recently commissioned by Assouline to capture the essence of Mleiha for their book Mleiha: Ancient Treasures of the UAE.

I wanted to approach this project by focusing closely on the rich textures, details and colors present in the open desert and in the architecture in this part of the world, which I discovered was best captured in the early morning or late afternoon into the evening to bring out the sharp shadows and saturated hues I was after. Working with abstraction in shadows and highlights always creates interesting opportunities for storytelling.

To best express the wonder of sleeping in the desert under the stars, I chose a 18mm wide angle lens to try to include as much stars in the frame as possible. Photographing the ancient artifacts also created depth to the storytelling aspect of this project, after all this part of the world is the cradle of civilization. The items were shot individually with an off camera speed light for added brilliance and to bring out the textures.

Photographing the 2026 New York City Blizzard

Took a walk through New York City during the blizzard of February 2026 with my camera.

What attracts me most about photographing in these conditions from a visual perspective is the additional layer of atmosphere overlaying everything, abstracting light and creating an almost painterly look of familiar landmarks and streets. Always a fun, albeit cold, time observing and studying how the environment interacts with the snow.

From an experiential perspective, just the fact that the streets are almost apocalyptically empty adds another layer of uneasiness to the time spent outdoors exploring. It’s eerily quiet as well as the snow absorbs most sounds, enhancing the experience.
